The sport of track and field was actually invented in 776 BC. It was during the first Olympic event in Ancient Greece. During the first Olympics, the first track and field event was done and it is comprised of athletes running on foot. It is said that the sport of track and field was inspired by the observation of man's natural life process.

As the days pass, more and more people became interested in competing in this sport. Because of the popularity of the sport, more events were added which made the history of track and field more colorful and interesting. The first event for track and field was called the stade race. When compared to modern time events, the stade race would be the sprint. The athletes will run a distance of 200 meters from the start to the end. This gave birth to the 200 meter sprint of modern Olympics.

The history of track and field of modern times started in 1896. Since then various track and field events were introduced to the Olympics. Examples of these track and field events are jumping, pole vault, long jump, and many others. The pole vault was developed in the Netherlands. During those times, the pole vault was done on natural vaults. Examples of the hurdles used at that time were marshlands, streams, and canals. Almost all the jumping events in the Olympics were added in 1896. The pole vault, triple jump, high jump and long jump became very popular events in the Olympics. However, during this year, women are not yet allowed to participate in the said events.

In the year 1912, the decathlon was added in the Olympics. Before this year only the pentathlon was done. The pentathlon is comprised by only 5 track and field events while the decathlon is composed of 10 track and field events. Again, during this time, women are not yet allowed to participate in the decathlon. Only during the 1964 were the women allowed to join the said event. However, it was quickly replaced by the heptathlon which is comprised by 7 track and field events.
